Finding Hygge – Exploring Copenhagen, Denmark

11.20.17

MIA to CPH

Scandinavian airlines mia to cph flysas

I was recently invited on a press trip (sponsored by Visit Denmark, Visit Copenhagen, Scandinavian Airlines) to explore Copenhagen, Denmark. The Danish capital has become quite the destination with its startlingly impressive cuisine, design, style, and overall quality of life. I was beyond eager to get to know the city and discover the meaning behind a concept I’d read about: “hygge.” Most commonly (mis)generalized as “cozy” – hygge is an inherently Danish term used to acknowledge a special feeling or moment. It’s about not just being present, but also recognizing and enjoying the present…creating moments to help enhance daily life i.e. burning a candle, or meeting a friend for coffee. I couldn’t wait to experience it straight from the source.

Getting to Copenhagen is quite easy thanks to direct flights between MIA & CPH through Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). We flew comfortably in SAS Plus, which gave us access to the Lounges, delicious food and refreshments, and tons of in-flight movies/entertainment. One 9-hour flight later and we made it to our destination.

Hotel Sanders

I stayed at the brand new luxury boutique Hotel Sanders right in the center of the city and within walking distance of pretty much everything. With its beautifully curated interiors and hospitable (not to mention good-looking) staff, the hotel is the epitome of casual luxury and simple elegance minus the pretentiousness, which almost instantly makes you feel at home. The inviting restaurant is aptly referred to as “Kitchen.” The lobby is not a lobby; rather it’s the “Living Room.” Classic cocktails flow from the intimate and seductive hotel bar, TATA.

The Sights…and Flavors

Throughout our entire stay we indulged in the most delicious (and beautiful!) food. I was blown away at how fresh everything is. New Nordic Cuisine has revolutionized Danish gastronomy and created a focus on local ingredients. From tasting new spins on classic dishes to traditional foods like pickled herring, and trying natural wine for the first time – I marveled in it all. Here’s the list of restaurants, cafes and bars we visited. Plenty of hygge across the board. You’re welcome:

Aside from eating my way through the city, I was able to explore the sights, sounds and of course the shopping (I’m looking at you Storm Copenhagen)! We did a fun boat tour throughout the canals, under the bridges and out into the harbor. We were shown around the diverse neighborhood of Nørrebro, which has evolved from being a primarily working class area to one of Copenhagen’s hottest neighborhoods with tons of local shops. It was there that we also got to see Superkilen – a colorful sprawling urban space that fuses architecture, landscape and art (hello Instagram photo-opp). Later we strolled through Assistens Cemetery, the final resting place of famous Danes like author Hans Christian Andersen.

Before this trip, I was already fascinated by the Viking Age of Scandinavia and Norse mythology. Danes are quite proud of their heritage, and it shows in their everyday, from the cuisine to the Norse art tattooed on their bodies. I was also very intrigued by the secret of hygge, and often wondered whether this was the key to Danes being consistently ranked among the happiest people in the world. My takeaway from this trip is that they are definitely doing something (or basically everything) right.

THE STAYCATIONERS – SHELBORNE

12.06.16

Photos Yesi Flores

It’s no secret that South Beach is known for glitzy yacht life and a wild club scene. But what if I told you there is more…that there is rich history in a lot of these buildings beckoning tourists and locals to relish in all its glamorously restored glory? Welcome to The Shelborne, where the storied elegance of the 1950s surrounds you, and the modern edge of the 21st century entertains you. Join Yelany (of @Le.Haute.Sauce), Yesi Flores (@simplylively behind the camera) and I for a relaxing Miami staycay.

THE SPOT: The Shelborne | 1801 Collins Ave, Miami Beach

THE STATS: Recently renovated, 200 rooms, 1 iconic pool, plush air-conditioned cabanas, beach access, eclectic restaurant spearheaded by “Top Chef” alumni

PERFECT FOR: A vintage vogue Miami experience with a refreshingly modern feel, perfect for any relaxing, yet stylish, getaway

BEAUTY AND THE BUBBLY

Walk with us past The Sarsaparilla vintage VW food truck (more on that later) and under the retro-chic Shelborne sign to get this staycay started. We are greeted with bubbly and led to the library. The Library Lounge, that is.

POOL DAZE

After slipping into something a little more comfortable and pool-appropriate, thanks to on-site shop Indie Soul, we were ready to get our lounge on at The Shelborne’s iconic pool, cabana massages included. Warning: the following images may cause extremely relaxing vibes.

THE SUITE LIFE

Time to shake things up and get glammed up by the ultimate beauty crew, GLAMSQUAD. Our suite went from 0 to a 100 real quick and a fuse may or may not have been blown, literally (sorry hotel maintenance!). But we were up and running, and the rosé was flowing.

DINERS’ PARADISE

Table for three please! After a full day of R&R, we were eager to taste the contemporary cuisine of The Shelborne’s Sarsaparilla Club, led by husband-and-wife duo and Top Chef alumni Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth. By fusing Cantonese Dim Sum and American Comfort Food, the restaurant showcases soul-nurturing, conscientiously sourced, farm-fresh dishes. Now would be the time to put a bib on (read: DROOL).

NIGHTCAPS

After a serious dinner at The Sarsaparilla Club, we made our way to the Drawing Room Bar & Lounge where we enjoyed beautifully crafted elixirs to cap off the night, but not before being greeted by a vibey, very appropriate neon sign that read: “Too much is never enough.” No doubt a reference to life’s pleasures, or perhaps to our affinity for rosé.

MORNING MUSINGS

Sleek art deco-inspired details, breakfast in bed, and relaxing ocean views are the perfect way to end our stay at The Shelborne. We bid adieu to the hotel with one last walk around the grounds and a cup of coffee for the road.

Miami Beach EDITION x THE STAYCATIONERS

Take me away…on a staycay.

When Taste The Style‘s travel editorial series THE STAYCATIONERS comes a-knocking, you say HELL YES. And that’s exactly what I did as I met up with STAYCATIONERS queen, Céline, and Christina of Le City Kitty for this fabulous day at The Miami Beach EDITION. Scroll through as I take you on a tour, captured through the lens of the talented Yesi (aka Simply Lively).

First thing’s first, a little bubbly courtesy of Perrier-Jouët to get the festivities started before the lovely ladies of 1821salon came through to tame these humidity-stricken tresses with none other than Bumble and Bumble goodies (Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil is my fave). We quickly slipped into the most flattering swimsuits and cozy coverups by Cosabella. Then it was on to the pool…

After a few bubbly-induced giggles and cabana-lounging we ventured around the lushly landscaped pools and made our way to The Sandbox. Yep – the most perfect secluded tropical nook complete with hammocks and daybeds. The EDITION knows how to set the stage for ultimate relaxation. No mid-day snoozing though! Because it was on to THE MOST DELICIOUS dinner and cocktails at Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Matador Room, but not before freshening up and changing into this head-turning white hot Style Mafia number ❤️

After our proper chow-down at Matador Room, it was time to get-down…

…to the basement. Basement Miami, that is. What can I say other than this place is a sensory DELIGHT. Bar, club, bowling alley and ice-skating (yes, you read right, ice-skating). This is a must-go. Our friend Alexandra of Spur of the Moments joined us to complete our ultimate girl squad.

Wouldn’t be a staycation without a little jumping-on-the-bed action though, and that included some candy that may or may not have been tossed in the air…sweet ending to the sweetest staycay with THE STAYCATIONERS.

Havana, Cuba

06.19.16

I was recently given the opportunity to travel to Havana, Cuba for Sunglass Hut and their #ShadesOfYou campaign with my friend and talented photographer Yesi of Simply Lively. What a freaking amazing experience, to say the least, and such impeccable timing too (our trip was just a few days before the Chanel/celebrity invasion explosion). All eyes have been on the island nation as of late, thanks to thawing US-Cuba relations, and I was eager to see the real Cuba (yes, the real essence of Cuba) for myself, so Yesi and I did what we do best – we took to the streets and explored as much as we could, shooting for Sunglass Hut and meeting amazing people along the way.

We learned so much about daily life there. Our driver René, a warm-hearted man in his fifties, guided us and eagerly spoke to us about past experiences intermingled with what he hopes for the future.  One thing is obvious, change is coming. You can feel it in the air; spurts of (American) English overheard when you turn a corner. And while the younger generation does have a respect for what the older generation accomplished, they are ready to experience a more relaxed political atmosphere, with more economic opportunities to exercise their own profession and exercise their own talents.

*Feel free to comment if you have any questions regarding my time there, or what I’m wearing, and be sure to follow on Instagram for outtakes and more*

No Place Like Home – San Juan, Puerto Rico

No place like home…Went out for a stroll back in Puerto Rico; I love visiting the field in front of the old fort, El Morro, in Old San Juan. The greens and blues are soothing and it’s nice to just sit and feel the ocean breezes on your face. People are flying kites, laying out in the grass and eating piraguas (our version of snowcones). So much history, sometimes I like to touch the walls and think, “How many people, or soldiers, hundreds of years ago touched this same spot?”

The heat is insane, so I stick to light clothing (tap shorts and bodysuit by American Apparel) and my white Keds. Paired that with a flannel around the waist for island breezy nights, and my red clear Marc by Marc Jacobs satchel via Joanna Paige. Yes, you’ll notice I’m using a Casio calculator watch. I own two calculator watches, because they’re awesome throwbacks and you can find them on Amazon or Ebay. And yes, I love the 90s.
